These observables typically correspond to low-dimensional projections of high-dimensional dynamics or a spatially coarse-grained (e.g. "binned") version thereof, and the experiments are generically analyzed by time-averaging along individual traces. It has long been known that projections that couple to slow hidden degrees of freedom give rise to memory in the observed dynamics. However, we are only beginning to understand their implications for thermodynamics and observed transport, in particular in systems driven far from thermodynamic equilibrium. In this course, we will address the fundamentals of the theory focusing on the laws of quantum thermodynamics. We will also present the main practical applications of this theory, such as quantum thermal machines and batteries, and point out the main conceptual issues when dealing with quantities such as heat, work, or entropy. Please note: This is a graduate-level course. Attendees are expected to have a minimum understanding of thermodynamics and quantum theory. While familiarity with Master Equation techniques is advisable (see Ref. [1]), a general overview will be provided at the beginning of the course. Structure: 1. It has been shown under very general conditions that physical implementations such operations must be thermodynamically irreversible, with work cost exceeding the difference in free energy between the average input and average output state. However, many concrete aspects have not previously been addressed, including the scale of the excess work. We here examine thermodynamically optimal protocols for the insightful case of non-unitary qubit operations with two input and output states, quantifying the work costs and building a physical interpretation of why the process must be irreversible. We will begin with the Stuart-Landau equation, the simplest description of a limit cycle oscillator, ˙z(t) = (α + iω − |z|2)z. Kuramoto’s famous model of phase synchronization was derived from coupling such oscillators and has seen a wealth of study from various scientific disciplines. > Despite this fact, the study of coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators, absent Kuramoto’s reduction, is largely absent until recently. I will present some preliminary results in this direction based off of a joint work with Ana P Millan, David Poyato, and Francesco Tudisco. We will then overview the Kuramoto model, and its higher order generalizations, the Lohe Matrix model, and the Schrödinger-Lohe model of quantum synchronization.
