Seminar: Adiabatic training for Variational Quantum Algorithms

The Quantum Thermodynamics and Quantum Computing Group (QTCG) of the University of Granada invites all the university members to attend the following seminar. Date and time: Friday October 25, 11am. Speaker: Ernesto Acosta. PhD Student UGR. Supervisors: Carlos Cano Gutiérrez, Guillermo Botella Juan 25-10-2024 Abstract: On this talk we present a new hybrid Quantum Machine Learning model (QML) composed of three elements: a classical computer in charge of the data preparation and interpretation; a Gate-based Quantum Computer running the Variational Quantum Algorithm (VQA) representing a Quantum Neural Network (QNN); and an adiabatic Quantum Computer where the optimization function is executed to find the best parameters for the VQA. As of the present moment the majority of VQAs are being trained using gradient-based classical optimizers having to deal with the barren-plateau effect. Some gradient-free classical approaches such as Evolutionary Algorithms have also been proposed to overcome this effect. However, adiabatic quantum models have not been defined to train VQAs. A quick review of Artificial Neural Networks and Variational Quantum Algorithms concepts is presented, along with the description of barren-plateau effect in relation to vanishing gradients. Then we will describe the proposed adiabatic training model comparing the obtained results against the classical gradient-based algorithms, showing the feasibility of integration for gate-based and adiabatic quantum computing models. We will end up with some highlights on the current phase of research towards iterative and multithreaded adiabatic training. We propose an extension of Hermite Distributed Approximating Functionals (HDAF) to MPS, a highly accurate pseudospectral method for approximating functions of derivatives. Integrating HDAF into an MPS finite precision algebra, we test four types of quantum-inspired algorithms for time evolution: explicit Runge-Kutta methods, Crank-Nicolson method, explicitly restarted Arnoli iteration and split-step. The benchmark problem is the expansion of a particle in a quantum quench, characterized by a rapid increase in space requirements, where HDAF surpasses traditional finite difference methods in accuracy with a comparable cost. Moreover, the efficient HDAF approximation to the free propagator avoids the need for Fourier transforms in split-step methods, significantly enhancing their performance with an improved balance in cost and accuracy. Both approaches exhibit similar error scaling and run times compared to FFT vector methods; however, MPS offer an exponential advantage in memory, overcoming vector limitations to enable larger discretizations and expansions. Finally, the MPS HDAF split-step method successfully reproduces the physical behavior of a particle expansion in a double-well potential, demonstrating viability for actual research scenarios. However, despite significant recent progress, the overhead of state-of-the-art protocols for magic distillation is still eyewatering. This poses the natural question: can we do better, even in principle? In this talk I’ll introduce the basics of majorization theory - an abstract mathematical toolset with a wide range of applications spanning economics [*] and quantum theory alike. I’ll discuss some recent work where we apply the machinery of majorization to quasiprobability representations of magic states to obtain entropic constraints on the achievable overhead of magic distillation. These constraints give rise to fundamental trade-off relations on the code parameters appearing in practical distillation protocols. From a more foundational perspective, in this picture the processing of magic states under stabilizer circuits (a universal model for quantum computing) can be viewed as akin to classical statistical mechanics with the appearance of negative entropies. In this context, we find that negative entropy is equivalent to Wigner negativity, and thus constitutes a necessary ingredient for quantum computational speed-up. Hola, os recuerdo que mañana hay un seminario muy interesante. Martes 4 de junio a las 10:00 en el aula A22 de la Facultad de Ciencias. Fluctuations, precision and transport far from thermodynamic equilibrium Single-molecule and particle-tracking experiments interrogate physical observables along individual trajectories. These observables typically correspond to low-dimensional projections of high-dimensional dynamics or a spatially coarse-grained (e.g. "binned") version thereof, and the experiments are generically analyzed by time-averaging along individual traces. It has long been known that projections that couple to slow hidden degrees of freedom give rise to memory in the observed dynamics. However, we are only beginning to understand their implications for thermodynamics and observed transport, in particular in systems driven far from thermodynamic equilibrium. I will review our recent efforts on how to describe and understand fluctuations, dissipation, and precision on the basis of path-based observables in systems driven arbitrarily far form equilibrium. In this course, we will address the fundamentals of the theory focusing on the laws of quantum thermodynamics. We will also present the main practical applications of this theory, such as quantum thermal machines and batteries, and point out the main conceptual issues when dealing with quantities such as heat, work, or entropy. Please note: This is a graduate-level course. Attendees are expected to have a minimum understanding of thermodynamics and quantum theory. While familiarity with Master Equation techniques is advisable (see Ref. [1]), a general overview will be provided at the beginning of the course. Structure: 1.
