Bio: Mariia Vladimirova is a senior researcher at Criteo AI Lab (Paris, France), and a member of Fairplay joint research team with Inria and ENSAE University. She bridges academic and industrial contexts, focusing on explaining and improving machine learning methods through probabilistic and causal statistical approaches. At Criteo, she leads initiatives on algorithmic fairness in online systems and provides expert consultation to policymakers on AI regulation. Mariia was named a Rising Star in AI Ethics 2025 by the Women in AI Ethics™ (WAIE) — a global initiative dedicated to increasing the recognition, representation, and empowerment of women in AI ethics. Beyond her research, she is a passionate advocate for gender diversity and inclusivity in technology. She actively organizes events that promote equitable opportunities and representation across the AI community, combining rigorous scientific inquiry with a commitment to building responsible and inclusive AI ecosystems.

Title: Causality and Fairness in AI
Abstract: Achieving fairness in artificial intelligence requires moving beyond correlations to uncover the causal mechanisms that drive biased outcomes. This talk explores how causal reasoning provides a principled framework for understanding and addressing unfairness in both predictive and generative AI systems. We will discuss recent developments that connect causal inference with fairness-aware modeling, showing how causal analysis can reveal sources of bias, guide data interventions, and support the design of models that produce equitable and reliable outcomes. By grounding fairness in causal reasoning, this work aims to provide a more robust theoretical and practical foundation for trustworthy AI.
We hope this talk will be of interest to you, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.
Best, Pablo
